The award-winning Clyde Quay Wharf is a redevelopment of a 100 year old heritage listed finger wharf on the edge of Wellington’s central city. Completed in August 2014, the extensive 239m-long development consists of retail and office premises at wharf level, 76 luxury apartments with sweeping harbour views, and an under-wharf basement car park below.
The old wharf was in a state of disrepair and required significant re-piling and re-strengthening. 205 piles and 28 individual 90-tonne slabs were cast above the high tide level.
The under wharf carpark was the first of its kind in Australasia and is a huge engineering achievement. It is right on top of the sea, with columns spaced at 6.096m precisely to cater to the exact size of each apartment.
The development was named Supreme Award winner at the 2015 New Zealand Commercial Project Awards. It also took the residential category, a gold, and the value award for properties over $15 million.
Judges praised the development as “A design, engineering and construction masterpiece, this development is a fantastic enhancement to Wellington’s waterfront.”
