The $100 million dollar Manukau Institute of Technology Tertiary Centre and Transport Exchange integrates a learning facility, new railway station and a bus interchange.

The new campus consists of three separate structures rising to six storeys high and linked by an impressive enclosed atrium. It is situated above the Manukau railway station, which remained operational throughout construction.

The construction process was unusual because it was built from the roof down (due to the existing rail trench).

The north and south elements of the building are connected by six 25m-long bridges which are suspended from the atrium roof trusses.

6m wide cantilevered lift lobbies overhang the train station below. They are also suspended from the atrium but due to their considerable load, construction could not wait until the atrium roof structure had been completed. A temporary structure was installed allowing the primary structure to be connected to the roof truss. This method enabled a conventional bottom-up construction sequence for this portion of the build.

The project encountered a significant setback when Mainzeal went into receivership, leaving the campus development incomplete with the roof only partially constructed. With a new main contractor awarded, MJH were back onsite to see the project through to completion.

MJH were awarded an SCNZ Excellence in Steel Construction Judges Merit award for our contribution in constructing this landmark building.
